ClimateCrossCulture

hello bonjour hola
今日は 你好 สวัสดี
My name is Ian Michael Baecht, and I have been an EFL/ESL/EAP instructor for almost 2 decades, working primarily in Japan, China, and my home state of California. I was an English Language Fellow based in Southwest China for two years before becoming an English lecturer at Wenzhou Kean University in 2019. I am an avid reader, walker, eater, traveler, and imbiber of life.
My Focus
This blog intends to focus on cross-cultural issues that might inform, support, or hinder effective climate response action. While cross-cultural communicative work is notionally inspired by increasing the efficacy of agents and environmental outcomes most productively and equitably, I also operate under the assumption that the broad topic of the interconnections between cross-culturally communicated and mediated discourses are inherently intertwined with issues around race/class/gender and that a critical look at climate discourse that takes intersectionality into account promises to eliminate systemic shadows which may obscure certain sections of the population from fully participating in the discourse around climate science.
As an educator, I also wish to inform my own practice. I teach many skills-development EFL and composition sections which are broadly interdisciplinary, and we have generous latitude on what our content is. I wish to include more climate science and discussion in these classes, but I am admittedly a novice. I am sure I function under the spells of some myths and narratives about climate science which might need a critical eye for me to come to understand them more deeply. So, I need to learn more, I need to critically examine any ‘common sense’ assumptions I may have about what the what and why of the climate crisis. But with that said, my goal is how to do better and get my messaging - my most accurate, timely, vetted, and yet personally situated narratives – across to my international audience. And of course, how can I help them to become more environmentally-minded and better environmental stewards in their futures?
